Rethinking Fisheries Sustainability in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf

The Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf are among the most important marine environments in the Middle East. Their fisheries support food security, employment, household incomes, coastal communities, and local economies. Fish and other marine resources also contribute to cultural traditions and provide an important foundation for the region’s emerging blue economy. Yet the future of these fisheries is increasingly influenced by a combination of pressures.
