  2. After fitting the lever/hand wheel accordingly, you have to rotate the valve clockwise to make sure it is airtight. The alignment of the disc should be done parallel to the ends.

  •   Release the top plate slightly.
  •   Open the two bolts loose.
  •   Then you can rotate the lever clockwise.

  •   Simply adjust and bolt the nuts situated on the gearbox.
  •   Open it completely.
  •   Then close the disc again and do it a couple of times.
  •   Until the alignment is done perfectly parallel to the end, repeat the process.
  1. Install the valve into the pipe. For wafer style butterfly valve, place it directly at the center in-between the flanges at the two ends of the pipe. Secure it with bolts to pass through the fluid. For Lug Butterfly valve install at the center of the flanges just like the wafer style but secure the screws at both inlet and outlet sides of the valves.
  2. Remove the foreign particles if found obstructing the pipe flanges.
  3. Please ensure that the technique is properly done and then tighten the bolts placed on the flanges.
  4. You can apply pressure the pipe towards the valve to check if there is any leakage or no. If leakage persists, then you have to again clean and tighten the bolts by using the criss-cross method. Make sure that the bolts are lubrication-free and dirt free.

Maintenance of Butterfly Valves

To take precaution against rusting and grease the butterfly valves should be maintained well.

  1. At the top of the valve, there is grease fitting. This may not be observed at the arrival of the valve. Make sure to apply grease at an interval to the neck of the valve till the excess grease flows out.
  2. At the gearbox, you can apply lithium based grease for its maintenance.
  3. You can clean all the parts of the valve easily by using any silicon-based product/lubricant.
  4. Try rotating or cycling the butter valve once a month if it’s not used regularly.

Solid Waste Management in Qatar

Qatar is counted among the world’s fastest growing economies. Municipal solid waste management is one of the most serious challenges faced by this tiny Gulf nation on account of high population growth rate, urbanization, industrial growth and economic expansion. The country has one of the highest per capita waste generation rates worldwide which is as high as 1.8 kg per day. Qatar produces more than 2.5 million tons of municipal solid waste each year. Solid waste stream is mainly comprised of organic materials (around 60 percent) while the rest of the waste steam is made up of recyclables like glass, paper, metals and plastics.

Municipalities are responsible for solid waste collection in Qatar both directly, using their own logistics, and indirectly through private sector contract. Waste collection and transport is carried out by a large fleet of trucks that collect MSW from thousands of collection points scattered across the country.

The predominant method of solid waste disposal is landfilling. The collected is discharged at various transfer stations from where it is sent to the landfill. There are three landfills in Qatar; Umm Al-Afai for bulky and domestic waste, Rawda Rashed for construction and demolition waste, and Al-Krana for sewage wastes. However, the method of waste disposal by landfill is not a practical solution for a country like Qatar where land availability is limited.

Waste Management Strategy

According to Qatar National Development Strategy 2011-2016, the country will adopt a multi-faceted strategy to contain the levels of waste generated by households, commercial sites and industry – and to promote recycling initiatives. Qatar intends to adopt integrated waste hierarchy of prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and as a last option, landfill disposal. 

A comprehensive solid waste management plan is being implemented which will coordinate responsibilities, activities and planning for managing wastes from households, industry and commercial establishments, and construction industry. The target is to recycle 38 percent of solid waste, up from the current 8 percent, and reduce domestic per capita waste generation. Five waste transfer stations have been setup in South Doha, West Doha, Industrial Area, Dukhan and Al-Khor to reduce the quantity of waste going to Umm Al-Afai landfill. These transfer stations are equipped with material recovery facility for separating recyclables such as glass, paper, aluminium and plastic.

In this respect, one of the most promising developments has been the creation of Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC) at Mesaieed. This centre is designed to maximize recovery of resources and energy from waste by installing state-of-the-art technologies for separation, pre-processing, mechanical and organic recycling, and waste-to-energy and composting technologies. It will treat 1550 tons of waste per day, and is expected to generate enough power for in-house requirements, and supply a surplus of 34.4 MW to the national grid. 

The Way Forward

While commendable steps are being undertaken to handle solid waste, the Government should also strive to enforce strict waste management legislation and create mass awareness about 4Rs of waste management viz. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery. Legislations are necessary to ensure compliance, failure of which will attract a penalty with spot checks by the Government body entrusted with its implementation.

Citizens can play a vital role in improving waste management scenario in Qatar by helping to reduce garbage generation and practicing source-segregation in households, offices etc. Being an influential Muslim country, the government may also take help of leading Islamic scholars to motivate the population to reduce per capita waste generation and conserve natural resources.

Improvement in curbside collection mechanism and establishment of material recovery facilities and recycling centres may also encourage public participation in waste management initiatives. When the Qatar National Development Strategy 2011-2016 was conceived, the solid waste management facility plant at Mesaieed was a laudable solution, but its capacity has been overwhelmed by the time the project was completed. Qatar needs a handful of such centers to tackle the burgeoning garbage disposal problem.

Recycling of PVC – Prospects and Challenges

PVC, also known as Polyvinyl Chloride or Vinyl, is one of the most widely used plastics worldwide due to its chemical stability and durability. PVC products have an average lifetime of 30 years, with some reaching 50 or more years.  This means that more PVC products are reaching the end-of-life and entering the waste stream, and the amount is likely to increase significantly in the near future.

The Middle East will ultimately have to deal with increased PVC waste as it is one of the markets expected to have high growth rates for PVC consumption, with developing countries in the region holding the best prospect for PVC in the long term.

Currently, PVC is being recycled by either one of the two ways:

  • Mechanical recycling – This involves mechanically treating the waste (e.g. grinding) to reduce it into smaller particles.  The resulting granules, called recyclate, can be melted and remolded into different products, usually the same product from which it came.
  • Feedstock recycling – Chemical processes such as pyrolysis, hydrolysis and heating are used to convert the waste into its chemical components.  The resulting products – sodium chloride, calcium chloride, hydrocarbon products and heavy metals to name a few – are used to produce new PVC, as feed for other manufacturing processes or as fuel for energy recovery.

Challenges in PVC Recycling

A major problem in the recycling of PVC is the high chlorine content in raw PVC (around 56 percent of the polymer’s weight) and the high levels of hazardous additives added to the polymer to achieve the desired material quality. As a result, PVC requires separation from other plastics before mechanical recycling.

In mechanical recycling, because no chemical reaction is involved, the recyclate retains its original composition. This poses a recycling challenge because PVC products, depending on their application, contain different additives.  For example, rigid PVC is unplasticized whereas flexible PVC is added plasticizers because this additive increases the plastic’s fluidity and thus, its flexibility. Even products used for the same application may still differ in composition if they have different manufacturers.

When different kinds of PVC waste are fed to a mechanical recycler, the resulting product’s composition is difficult to predict, which is problematic because most PVC products, even recycled ones, require a specific PVC content.  In order to produce a high-quality recylate, the feed ideally should not be mixed with other kinds of plastic and should have a uniform material composition. Material recycling is therefore more applicable for post-industrial waste than for post-consumer waste.

Feedstock recycling is seen to be complementary to conventional mechanical recycling as it is able to treat mixed or unsorted PVC waste and recover valuable materials.  However, a study showed that feedstock recycling (or at least the two that was considered) incurred higher costs than landfilling, primarily due to the low value of the recovered products. This provides little incentive for recyclers to pursue PVC recycling.  This may change in the future as more stringent regulations to protect the environment are enacted.  Some countries in Europe have already banned PVCs from landfills and PlasticsEurope is targeting a “zero plastic to landfill” in Europe.

Post-industrial waste is relatively pure and comes from PVC production and installation, such as cut-offs from laying of cables or scraps from the installation of window frames.  These are easily recycled since they can be collected directly from processors or installers or even recycled by producers themselves as raw material to manufacture the same product.

Post-consumer waste contains mixed material and has been used for different applications.  These are products that have reached the end-of-life or are replaced due to damage, like pipes from underground, window frames being replaced for renovation and electric cables recovered from demolition. These would require further sorting and cleaning, adding cost to the recycling process.  The recyclate produced is usually of lower quality and consequently of decreased economic value.

An interesting process, called Vinyloop®, utilize an organic solvent to dissolve PVC composite and separate the PVC from other materials.  After filtration, the PVC compound is dried and packaged, while the filtrate is treated and the solvent is recovered and recycled.  The primary energy demand, global warming potential, and water consumption for the production of one kilogram of Vinyloop® R-PVC (PVC produced from the said process) are all lower compared to the production of the same amount of PVC from the traditional route.

Promising Initiative

Europe is leading the way for a more sustainable use of PVC with programs, such as RecoVinyl and VinylPlus, where recycling is advanced as one of the ways to use resources more efficiently and to divert as much waste as possible from landfills. Recovinyl, created in 2003, is an initiative of the European PVC industry to advance the sustainable development of the PVC industry by improving production processes, minimise emissions, develop recycling technology and boost the collection and recycling of waste.

Having been successful in all of its goals, including an increase in recycling of PVC across Europe to over 240,000 tonnes a year, in 2011 the PVC industry redefined the role of Recovinyl as part of the ambitious new ten-year VinylPlus sustainable development programme. VinylPlus works in partnership with consumers, businesses, municipalities, waste management companies, recyclers and converter, as well as the European Commission and national and local governments. The goal is to certify those companies who recycle PVC waste and those accredited converting companies who purchase recyclate to manufacture new products and applications.

Even if some types of PVC recycling are not feasible or economically viable at present, it will likely be reversed in the future as governments, manufacturers, consumers and other stakeholders create programs that innovate and find ways to achieve a sustainable future for the PVC industry.

ومن أهم  أسس المكافحة المتكاملةمراقبه الآفات وهي المراقبة والرصد والتنبؤ للأطوار الكاملة للآفة وذلك بإستخدام المصائد الفرمونيه، الغذائية والضوئية بالإضافة إلى إعتماد الحد الإقتصادي الحرج وحد الضرر الإقتصادي عند إتخاذ أي قرار بالمكافحة الكيميائية والعمل على تحديد توقيت عملية المكافحة واختيار المبيدات المتخصصة والآمنة بيئياً مع ضرورة تربية وإطلاق الأعداء الحيوية للمحافظة عن البيئة “المكافحة الحيوية” والتركيز علىمكافحة مناطق الإصابة فقط (الرش الجزئي).

فعملية مراقبة الآفات :Monitoringهي عملية فحص وكشف دقيق للنبات تتم على فترات منتظمة وتهدف إلى ملاحظة ومعرفة تواجد الآفة في النبات وعلى أي جزء من أجزائه تشكل خطراً (الكشف المبكر للإصابة)، مراقبة الآفة  فيما إذا كانت أعدادها في تزايد.أم لا ، و بهدف معرفة وجود أعداء حيوية  ومدى كفاءتها ،وموعد ظهورها وسلوكها بالتغذية ،جمع معلومات كافية عن دورة حياتها وعدد أجيالها وأخيراً الوصول إلى قرار لضرورة المكافحة.

أما توقيت عملية المكافحة فيعتبر من أهم الخطوات التي تُتخذ عند إتخاذ القرار للمكافحة ، لأن بعض أطوار الآفات تكون حساسة للمبيدات أكثر من غيرها ، مما يؤدي إلى زيادة فعالية المبيد ضد الآفة (وهو الهدف الذي نسعى إليهلتخفيض الضرر بقتل أكثر عدد ممكن من الآفاتوالضرر يتمثل فيزيادة في حجم الأفراد وزيادة في عدد الأفراد.

وعند الحديث عن إختيار المبيدات المتخصصة والمناسبةسواء مبيدات ملامسةأو مبيدات جهازية فكثرة مناطق الإصابة ليس بالضرورة رش النبات كاملاً ، إنما نهتم فقط بالضرر الذي تسببه الآفة وليس وجودها. وهذا يعتمد على نوع الآفة وطبيعة الضرر الذي تسببه.

هنالك أسباب عديدة أدت إلى إستخدام المكافحة المتكاملة كبرنامج معتمد دوليا ً للحد من إنتشار الآفات والحد من ضررها الإقتصادي والمحاولة الحثيثة في الحفاظ على البيئة متوازنة ، منها ما هو مرتبط بالمبيدات نفسها ومنها ما هو مرتبط بمحاولة الإعتماد على الطرق الآمنة بيئياً على الإنسان والحيوان والبيئة.

ومن أهم هذه الأسبابأنه يجب أن ندرك أولاً وأخيراً أن المبيدات عبارة عن سموم تفتك بكل ما هو حي ولا ينجو من خطرها حتى الهواء الذي نتنفسه وبالتالي التقليل من إستخدامها حفاظاً على الإنسان والحيوان والبيئة ، المحافظة على الأعداء الحيوية والتوازن البيئيأمر هام لإستدامة الحياة ودعم قرار إختيار أفضل الطرق والمواعيد لمكافحة الآفات. وظهور سلالات مقاومة من الآفات للمبيدات وبالتالي فإن استخدام المبيدات لا يسبب إلا في تلوث البيئة.والحد أو التقليل من مصاريف الإنتاج لتحقيق عوائد أفضل وخاصة مع زيادة أسعار مستلزمات الإنتاج نتيجة إستخدام الرش العشوائي وغير المنتظم وزيادة الإنتاج نتيجة العمليات الزراعية وتحسين النوعية والتي تعتبر أحد مكونات المكافحة المتكاملة وأخيرا وليس آخراً إشتراط الدول المستوردة بعدم وجود متبقيات أعلى من الحد المسموح به عالمياً مما يقلل من فرص التصدير.

أما وسائل المكافحة المتكاملة: “طرق المكافحة المتكاملة” فهي أولاً مكافحة طبيعية وتشمل مكافحة غير حيوية تتضمن الحرارة، الأمطار، الرياح، الجفاف. ومكافحة حيوية تتضمن المفترسات، المتطفلات، الممرضات. وثانياً المكافحة التطبيقية وتشمل  المكافحة الزراعيةوذلك يجعل الظروف البيئية غير مناسبة للآفة وتهيئة الظروف المناسبة لنمو المحصول.

وأهم وسائل المكافحة الزراعيةإختيار التربة المناسبة للمحصول حيث أن كل محصول يحتاج إلى تربة معينة سواء كانت حامضية أو قاعدية أو متعادلة ، إختيار التقاوي السليمة حيث يعد إختيار التقاوي السليمة (بذور – شتل-غراس ….) الخطوة الأولى في المكافحة فعند إختيار تقاوي سليمة تنتج نباتات قوية خالية الآفات والأمراض ،وإتباع الدورة الزراعية من أهم العمليات للمحافظة على خصوبة التربة وعامل مهم في تخفيض الإصابة بالآفات ، وبالنسبة لمواعيد الزراعةفالتبكير بالزراعة يؤدي إلى حماية  المحصول وخفض الإصابة من الآفاتوإتباع طرق زراعية مناسبةوعلى عمق مناسب مع التغطية المناسبة يعمل على الحماية من الإصابة، كما أن الحراثة الجيدة عملية أساسية بهدف تفكيك التربة لإستقبال أكبر كمية ممكنة من الأمطار وإزالة الأعشاب الضارة التي تنمو وتؤثر على المحصول، منع تشقق التربة،زيادة خصوبة التربة،  تخفيض عدد الآفات بقتلها وتعريضها للظروف الجوية القاسية وللأعداء الحيوية وزيادة قوة نمو جذور النبات لتصبح أكثر انتشاراً. وتنظيم السماد: مصادر السماد : التربة  10-20% – المياه 30-40% – الزبل البلدي-  السماد الكيماويوالذي يهدف الى زيادة خصوبة التربة وزيادة قدرة التربة على الاحتفاظ بالرطوبة وبالتالي يؤدي إلى قوة نمو النبات وجعله أكثر مقاومة للآفات المختلفةزيادة محتواها من العناصر الضرورية للنبات.

وثالثاً المكافحة الميكانيكية:Mechanical control  والتي تحتل مكاناً هاماً من طرق المكافحة المتكاملة وتشملإستعمال الحواجز وذلك لمنع إقتراب الآفات من النبات خاصة في البيوت البلاستيكية ، إستعمال المناخل لمنع دخول البعوض والذباب للبيوت.والقتل المباشر للآفة بإستخدام الأسلاك لقتل يرقات الحفار.والجمع اليدوي وهذه الطريقة تعتمد على جمع الحشرات الكاملة واليرقات وقتلها (حشرة الكابنودس)وإستعمال المصائد المختلفة لصيد الحشرات الكاملة وأنواعها: مصائد غذائية جاذبة،مصائد فرمونية،مصائد ضوئية.

رابعاً المكافحة الحيوية ”Biological Control”:وتعبر عن إستخدام الأعداء الحيوية الموجودة في الطبيعة وبمعنى آخر أن لكل كائن حي  أعداؤه الطبيعية ، وأهم عناصرها:-  الإفتراس، المتطفلات،الممرضات، ومن ميزات هذه الطريقة الإستغناء كلياً أو جزئياً عن المبيدات الحشرية ،قلة تكاليفها النهائية وسهولة تنفيذها في الحقل، تخصصها المطلق في كثير من الأحيان والأهم من ذلك كله أنها غير ضارة للإنسان والبيئة. ومنأهم المفترسات المتوفرة في الطبيعةالعصافير.(البلبل، الخطاف، الشحرور،الوقواق) والضفادع والحشرات المفيدة.(حشرات أبو العيد،أسد المن،ذباب السرفيد)البوم (تهاجم الفأر والجرذ).

وخامسا المكافحة التشريعيةوذلك من خلال التشريعات التي تتخذها الدول لمن دخول أي آفات حجرية من خلال المراكز الحدودية .

سادساً وأخيراًالمكافحة الكيماوية (المبيدات) فالمبيد: هو أي مادة أو خليط من عدة مواد تنتشر في بيئة الآفة بوسائل مختلفة ، فتعمل على قتلها أو منع تكاثرها بهدف تخفيض أضرارها.وتشيرإحصائيات منظمة الصحة العالمية WHO إلى أنه يموت شخص واحد كل دقيقة بسبب التسمم بالمبيدات إضافة إلى الأمراض المزمنة التي تسببها هذه المبيدات.
